In una lista pubblicata nel 1999, il grande autore giapponese Akira Kurosawa ha rivelato i suoi 100 film preferiti della storia del cinema. Tra alcuni titoli abbastanza ovvi e immancabili, anche alcune sorprese italiane

Akira Kurosawa è, senza ombra di dubbio, l'autore più celebrato del cinema classico giapponese. Più di Yasujiro Ozu, di Kenji Mizoguchi e Kon Ichikawa, cineasti altrettanto geniali, ma forse più legati ad una tradizione propriamente nipponica; al contrario, Kurosawa, ha saputo invece proiettarsi nell'immaginario occidentale coi suoi racconti epici di samurai. Il risultato è una serie di riconoscimenti: oltre a un Oscar, un Leone e una Palma d'oro, addirittura due onorificenze dalla repubblica italiana, il primo nell'81 e il secondo nell'86. 
Un anno dopo la sua scomparsa avvenuta nel '98, in Giappone è stato pubblicato il libro Yume wa tensai de aru (A Dream is a Genius), contenente un capitolo speciale con i 100 film preferiti del celebre regista. Dichiara la figlia di Kurosawa, Kazuko: “Mio padre ha sempre detto che i suoi film preferiti siano troppi per poter essere contati e inseriti in una top 10, ed è per questo che non troverete in classifica alcune pellicole che comunque lui considerava meravigliose. Il criterio è stato: un solo film per regista, tra le opere indimenticabili di cui io e mio padre abbiamo amabilmente discusso, tra cui alcune idee di cinema che lui adorava ma che non ha mai espresso in pubblico”. 

Stilato in ordine cronologico, la top 100 parte dal 1919 (Giglio infranto di David Wark Griffith) fino al '97 (Hana-bi di Takeshi Kitano). In mezzo, film da ogni parte del mondo tra cui diversi italiani. Oltre ai più ovvi Ladri di Biciclette (Vittorio De Sica), Viaggio in Italia (Roberto Rossellini) e La Strada (Federico Fellini), anche Deserto Rosso (Michelangelo Antonioni), Gruppo di famiglia in interno (Luchino Visconti), Padre Padrone (Paolo e Vittorio Taviani) e La traviata (Franco Zeffirelli). Presenti anche i maestri della nouvelle vague francese, da Truffaut (I 400 colpi) a Godard (Fino all'ultimo respiro) e Chabrol (I cugini), così come la New Hollywood di Scorsese (Re per una notte), Altman (MASH), Friedkin (Il braccio violento della legge), Coppola (Il Padrino Parte II) e Woody Allen (Io e Annie). Insomma, praticamente un manuale di storia del cinema, per molti versi scontato, ma forse inevitabile.
